{"id":138,"date":"2009-10-04T21:58:51","date_gmt":"2009-10-05T03:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sydnieann.com\/?p=138"},"modified":"2009-10-04T21:58:51","modified_gmt":"2009-10-05T03:58:51","slug":"i-want-to-grow-something-wild-and-unruly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sydnieann.com\/?p=138","title":{"rendered":"I want to grow something wild and unruly&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This has been one of those weeks where I really wish I hadn&#8217;t given myself this <a href=\"http:\/\/sydnieann.com\/?p=82\" target=\"_blank\">self-imposed rule<\/a> about talking about work here. \u00a0Because, oh, there&#8217;s SO much I could talk about. \u00a0So much that it took me a few days to even think of something else to write about.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s getting cold!! \u00a0No snow yet here in Northern Colorado, though, even though my Wyoming &amp; Utah people have seen it! \u00a0So today, I decided to clean out the garden. \u00a0I&#8217;m still shocked at how many tomatoes were out there, in every shade from bright green to bright red. \u00a0I got about 25 more\u00a0jalape\u00f1os,\u00a0\u00a0another ginormous zucchini, and lots and lots of herbs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-142\" title=\"DSC01674\" src=\"http:\/\/sydnieann.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/DSC016741-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"DSC01674\" width=\"819\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sydnieann.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/DSC016741-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sydnieann.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/DSC016741-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s most of what I picked today. \u00a0The\u00a0jalape\u00f1os\u00a0and the dill are under the tomatoes. \u00a0I froze most of the herbs in little snack size baggies, put the green tomatoes in a brown paper bag to see if they ripen, and made some yummy pesto with the basil. \u00a0My fingers are now looking this lovely shade of greenish yellowish brown &#8211; gloves would have been a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Lessons learned from gardening this summer&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plant zucchini in its own area about an acre away from everything else. \u00a0A single zucchini plant will tower over everything in its vicinity.<\/li>\n<li>I don&#8217;t really need 6 tomato plants. \u00a0One or two would probably suffice.<\/li>\n<li>Plant more basil!! \u00a0Pesto is the best pasta sauce ever invented, and I need more.<\/li>\n<li>Jalape\u00f1os\u00a0turn red after a while! \u00a0Then they&#8217;re a little sweeter and not so hot.<\/li>\n<li>Coffee makes some of the bugs stay away.<\/li>\n<li>There is a far wider variety of bugs in our yard than I EVER imagined. \u00a0Some of them are LARGE! \u00a0And YUCKY! \u00a0And they like veggies!<\/li>\n<li>I should have spent more than $4 for a salad spinner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other food notes&#8230; Tina bought a pizzelle maker on Friday and made lots of yummy homemade pizzelle. \u00a0I ate them for most meals until they were gone. \u00a0Today&#8230; she made\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coffeecakes.com\/stroopwafel.html\" target=\"_blank\">stroopwafels<\/a>. \u00a0We had them in Amsterdam last year, and they are one of the greatest most delicious cookie snacks ever (along with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/almostbourdain.blogspot.com\/2009\/09\/appel-pannenkoek-pannekoek-dutch-apple.html\" target=\"_blank\">pannenkoeken<\/a>\u00a0and the amazing fries from the street vendors)! \u00a0And now&#8230; they are here! \u00a0In my kitchen! \u00a0Homemade! \u00a0So&#8230; yes, my sugar intake has been a little high&#8230; just makes me sweeter, right?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This has been one of those weeks where I really wish I hadn&#8217;t given myself this self-imposed rule about talking about work here. \u00a0Because, oh, there&#8217;s SO much I could talk about. \u00a0So much that it took me a few days to even think of something else to write about.
